Man arraigned for forgery in Edo


A 58-year-old man, Solomon Osunobun, has been arraigned before an Oredo Magistrate Court sitting in Benin for allegedly forging three confirmation letters of appointment into the Edo State civil service.


Osunobun was arraigned on a two-count charge bothering on forgery and pleaded not guilty to the charges.


Police Prosecutor, Sylvester Omor, informed the court that the suspect and others at large had between May 6, 1988 and September 1995, forged the letters all marked as C.114/T/50 on September 8, 1995, May 11, 1981 and May 6, 1988, respectively, at the state Ministry of Transport.


He said the suspect and his accomplices ‎presented the letters as being issued by a former Commissioner for Works and Transport and therefore committed an offence punishable under Sections 516 and 467 of the Criminal Code Cap 48, Vol. II, Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, now applicable in Edo State.


Presiding magistrate, C. A. Nwoha, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 and a surety who must be resident in Benin City.


The court also turned down a request by the defence counsel, Robert Imafidon, to access copies of the case file, in line with Section 36 (6) (b) of the 1999 Constitution, to enable the defence prepare for cross examination.
