Edo: Driver jailed eight years for stealing diesel

A commercial bus driver, Osaro Odia, has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment with hard labour for stealing 15 gallons of diesel valued at N67, 750.00.

He was jailed by an Evboriaria Special Grade Court sitting in Benin City and presided over by F. O Idiake.

Odia,  who was arraigned in August last year on a two-count charge had pleaded not guilty to the charges, but his accomplice, John Osarumwense, pleaded guilty in September last year.

Osarumwense was subsequently sentenced to six years imprisonment on both charges or an option of N100,000 fine on each of the count.

Police Prosecutor, Aigbedion Obakpolor, informed the court that both convicts were arrested by some local vigilantes while scooping diesel at a telecommunication mast belonging to Glo Mobile.

Magistrate Idiake in his judgment delivered found Odia guilty on both charges and sentenced him to four years imprisonment on each charge without an option of fine.

The jail term will run concurrently.
